Energy efficiency has come into focus for information and communication technology (ICT) due to the global movement of energy saving related to the global climate change. The power consumption of ICT has risen in recent years and will continue to do so. Currently about 4% of the global power consumption is caused by the ICT and a growth of 16-20% has been estimated. Therefore, technologies to decrease the power consumption of mobile communication equipment have become a research topic of our department.
In order to contribute to the increase of energy efficiency the wireless communication and networks department, in collaboration with other Fraunhofer institutes, has joined the GreenTouch Consortium.
