The Multicore SVC Realtime Encoder (720p/30Hz) produces the bitstream in one single encoding process. The base layer bitstream is backward compatible to H.264. The partial decoding of the scalable bitstream allows: Graceful degradation when parts of the bitstream get lost and Bit rate, format and power adaptation.

• Compact representation of video signals at various resolutions allows efficient transmission and storage (upload of signals for distribution, and erosion storage)
• Support of any type of unicast transmission service with uncertainties regarding channel conditions (throughput, errors) or device types (supported spatio-temporal resolution by decoder, display and power)
• Support of any type of multicast or broadcast transmission service with a diversity of uncertainties of the unicast transmission

The software-based SVC Realtime Encoder and Decoder system is part of the EASY-C research project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
