Overview
The mission of our group is to carry out not only fundamental research in the field of wireless information systems and statistical signal processing but also bring new directions and key ideas as fast as possible to standards and practice. We are particular active in the field of 3GPP LTE and LTE advanced mobile communication systems where we have contributed fundamental solutions together with our industry partners. An excellent example is the BMBF project 3GeT where we promoted LTE evolution from scratch and delivered results ranging from capacity computation to practical resource allocation algorithms. Our research is rooted in communication theory, information theory and signal processing but is also inspired by many other disciplines such as applied mathematics, economics etc. Additionally, we put emphasis on teaching our students in a series of lectures related to our expertise in order to attract and to enthuse them for our work.
Main Research Areas

3GPP LTE Advanced and Heterogeneous Access
Applied research in the context of 3GPP LTE ‘Long Term Evolution’ has a long history at MCI including the hugely successful 3GeT project as well as numerous industry projects.

Queueing Networks and Flow Control
Queueing networks are established in many disciplines and queuing theory in combination with control and information theory is an extremely useful tool. In wireless systems queueing of data not only has the effect of using opportunistic transmission schemes but has particular design and theoretical effect.

Coordination, Cooperation and Control in Wireless Networks
The next step in (cellular, mesh, ad hoc) networks is to break the interference barrier. Future systems will afford that schemes are run by suitable control and self-organizing mechanisms without any help of the operator.

Network Information Theory
Computing the capacity region of wireless networks is the holy grail of network information theory. Even though fundamental progress has been achieved recently, the problem still awaits its fundamental solution.

Generalized Multicarrier Transmission
Nowadays, multicarrier systems such as LTE/LTE-A evolve more and more towards intercell cooperation and coordination. However, neither of the theoretically possible huge performance gains could be realized yet due to practical impairments such as asynchronism and channel uncertainty. One of the key solutions is the use of Generalized Multicarrier Systems.

Green IT
Energy efficiency particularly matters in future mobile communications networks. Key driving factor is the growing energy cost of network operation which can make up as much as 50% of the total operational cost nowadays.
