Mobile World Congress 2024

FEB 2024

26 - 29

Barcelona, Spain

Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) is a world leader in the development of mobile and optical communication networks and systems as well as processing and coding of video signals. Together with international partners from research and industry, Fraunhofer HHI works in the whole spectrum of digital infrastructure – from basic research to the development of prototypes and solutions.

At Mobile World Congress 2024, Fraunhofer HHI presents the latest developments in Wireless Communications and Networks as well as Video Communication and Applications at booth #5F31, hall 5 and in Photonic Networks and Systems at the Berlin Partner booth 7B81, hall 7, on February 26 - 29 in Barcelona, Spain.

XR Real-time Communication with L4S over 5G

Virtual humans can be used as computer-generated representations of real people for real-time communication in mixed reality scenarios. Bringing virtual humans to mobile devices poses several challenges for the streaming system and the network.

At MWC 2023, Fraunhofer HHI demonstrates interactive high-quality volumetric video streaming for cloud-based mixed reality over 5G. We present novel techniques for interactive animation with volumetric assets and network congestion control in real-time through Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable throughput (L4S) standard to provide stable and low latency for the best user experience. The presented interactive XR experience showcases photo-realistic volumetric representation of human. As the user moves in the scene, the virtual human follows the user with his head, conveying the impression of a true interaction. The animation of the virtual human is performed in real-time by applying AI-based techniques that use media samples retrieved from a remote device to generate facial expressions.

Build your own LiFi

Building blocks to deploy LiFi in various application scenarios

LiFi is mobile communication by using the light. It complements RF in various scenarios where radio is not possible. To cover these emerging markets, HHI developed basic building blocks that can be tailored and combined to build you own LiFi.
