The HHI has consistently orientated its fields of expertise towards present and future market and development demands.
The main emphasis of our work is on video and audio coding and transmission (Video over IP), both for landline and mobile phone networks. Here the area of mobile TV, both for DVB-H and for DMB has developed especially successfully.
Other important topics are 2D and 3D image signal processing, which are being complemented by focusing on mixed reality displays, auto-stereoscopic 3D displays, human-machine interfaces and information management, as well as image and video archiving.
Our fields of expertise in the area of photonic networks and systems extend from high-capacity flexible wide area networks to broadband in-house networks.
In the field of mobile phones, they range from resource assignment techniques for UMTS expansions (3GPP LTE) to MIMO systems up to 1 Gbps, WPAN systems up to 60 GHz and ad hoc networks.
The area of photonic components comprises the development and production of optical and electro-optical components and modules on the basis of indium phosphide in wavelengths of 1.1 μm to 2.0 μm, polymer light-wave conductors and diffractive visual elements.
The comprehensive equipment at the HHI can also be used by third parties as part of a service offer. Procuring the measuring devices is extremely cost-intensive and medium-scale enterprises either do not have sufficient capital at their disposal or are only able to obtain a small part of the necessary equipment.
Expert operation of these complex measurement systems also requires trained professionals who are not always available elsewhere. In this way, the HHI can contribute its knowledge (measurements, training programmes, qualifications) to project partnerships.
