High-Speed Digital Signal Processing for Terabit Speed in Optical Access Networks

Recent research activities in optical communication are focused on high-speed short-range connections. Especially the increasing demand for high-speed data centers communication, with the overall goal of terabit data rates, is the driving force. Compared to long-haul systems, where complex optics and modulation formats are used, a simpler approach is necessary taking into account the cost aspect and the use of different techniques for terabit data center communication, for link lenghts of 1 m to 1 km are studied. Approaches are an increased modulation bandwidth, the use of higher modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing in combination with standard electrical and optical components.
