Fraunhofer HHI presents research results at the Global LiFi Congress in Paris

June 11, 2019

The Global LiFi Congress will be held for the second time, after its premier in 2018. This year it will take place, from June 12 to 13, in Paris. Researchers and representatives of the industry meet here to exchange ideas and pave the way for Li-Fi technology from research to application. At the Congress, the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI is represented by three scientists who hold lectures, give keynotes and sit on panels.

At this year's Global LiFi Congress, scientists from Fraunhofer HHI will present their latest research results. Volker Jungnickel, Head of the Metro, Access and In-house Systems Group in the Department of Photonic Networks and Systems, gives a keynote speech on the latest state of LiFi research and is part of the panel "Standards for LiFi". Furthermore, he reports on new research results in his lecture: "Enhance Lighting for the Internet of Things." Sreelal Maravanchery Mana, reasearcher at the department Photonic Networks and Systems, gives the lecture: "Experiments in Non-Line-of-Sight Li-Fi Channels" and Anagnostis Paraskevopoulos, project manager in the department Photonic Networks and Systems, describes project experiences in his lecture: "Design of a secure software-defined access network for flexible Industry 4.0 manufacturing - The SESAM-project concept".

Li-Fi, also referred to as Visible Light Communication (VLC), is an alternative to conventional Wi-Fi technologies. VLC data transmission is also wireless, but uses modulated light produced e.g. by LED lighting sources instead of radio waves. Among the advantages of VLC are the robustness against radio waves and electromagnetic fields. Li-Fi also provides additional spectrum for crowded radio networks and is less susceptible to interference.

The Global LiFi Congress provides an overview on the topical areas of Li-Fi and demonstrates the sector's challenges and developments. Academic conferences and round-table discussions will give representatives from science and business the chance to share their visions with regard to Li-Fi innovations and applications.
