In recognition of his substantial contributions to international video coding standards, Prof. Thomas Wiegand, head of the Image Processing department at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI, has been awarded the Leadership Award of the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC). The award goes to distinguish individuals whose work has made outstanding contributions to the future of the multimedia industry.
Honoring industrially relevant research
“I am particularly delighted with this award from an international industry consortium because it also recognizes the global economic relevance of our scientific research", said Prof. Thomas Wiegand after receiving the award in Porto, Portugal. The criteria on which the IMTC Leadership Awards are based include significant contributions to standardization within the multimedia sector.
Major contributions to video coding standards
Over one billion devices worldwide now feature the H.264/MPEG-AVC video transmission standard in whose development Prof. Wiegand and the Image Processing department at Fraunhofer HHH have played such a leading role. Prof. Wiegand and his department are also involved in the development of the forthcoming and even more efficient High Efficiency Video Coding standard H.265/MPEG-HEVC, through their participation in the standardization work of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group, VCEG, and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group, MPEG. The overall aim of research and development in video coding is to reduce the bit rate of video transmission with no corresponding loss in picture quality.
