In July 2016, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI and Tokyo Institute of Technology launched the second EU-Japan funded research project with international partners focusing on the realization of the first 5G cellular networks in the 5G Berlin Testbed and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The 5G-MiEdge (Millimeter-wave Edge cloud as an enabler for 5G ecosystem) project will develop a feasible 5G ecosystem by combining mmWave edge cloud, liquid RAN C-plane, and user/application centric orchestration. The project will contribute to the standardization of mmWave access and liquid RAN C-plane in both 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). At the end, the project will demonstrate a joint 5G Testbed in the city of Berlin (5G Berlin Testbed) and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
