A total of twelve advanced use cases for the "factory of the future" have successfully been incorporated into the Technical Report defining communication requirements for automation in vertical 5G domains (3GPP TR 22.804 ), i.e. for digitization in the manufacturing industry.
The use cases were successfully integrated into the Technical Report in the last meeting of the working group for service architectures (SA1). Members of the Task Force 5G of Germany’s Central Electrical Engineering and Electronics Industry Association (ZVEI), which had been established as a unified effort to make the public aware of the interests of the automation industry with regard to 5G, worked together on these use cases, as did different partners of the research project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy "Industrial Communication for Factories" (IC4F).
The use cases describe requirements for future communication solutions that support 3GPP in implementing key 5G technologies for Industry 4.0. Mobile robotics, augmented reality, manufacturing automation, process control and Monitoring, mobile remote access, mobile operating devices with security features, and massive, wireless sensor networks – these are relevant topics to be dealt with. In the long term, these use cases will help make production more and more flexible by means of 5G, increase the level of security and raise the level of efficiency of the digital factory.
The fifth-generation mobile phone network will have a key role in the communication of the future. Industry 4.0 and the tactile Internet for wireless control in real time will require a huge increase in the efficiency, performance and availability of mobile communications networks. The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a global cooperation of standardization bodies working toward standardization in mobile communications. The aim of the standardization efforts is to create precise technical specifications for all mobile phone manufacturers.
