Dr.-Ing. Kim Mahler, Project Manager Fraunhofer HHI, and Prof. Kei Sakaguchi, Tokyo Institute of Technology, organized and chaired together the industry seminar "V2X for Automated Driving in 4G, 5G and beyond" at the IEEE GLOBECOM 2017 in Singapore.
Automated driving is a game changer in the automotive industry. Current autonomous vehicles are based on sensor fusion and can maneuver so far in scenarios of limited complexity. However, automated driving in realistically more complex scenarios will require additional capabilities to perceive and predict the surrounding environment of vehicles with help of telecom technologies. Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications together with cooperative sensor approaches are considered to become important enabler technologies in these efforts.
The panel gathered experts from both automotive and telecom industries to discuss current activities in this field and to find future research directions related to V2X communications to realize end-to-end solutions for future mobility and transportation services. After presenting their talks, the panelists Basu Saptarshi (Continental), Satoshi Nagata (NTT DOCOMO), Alexey Khoryaev (Intel), Dr. Kazuaki Takahashi (Panasonic) and Dr. Taro Eichler (Rohde & Schwarz) discussed relevant questions on the topic of automated driving. Overall, the panel contributed substantially to the discourse towards a comprehensive V2X for automated driving.
The industry seminar "V2X for Automated Driving in 4G, 5G and beyond" won the "Most Attended Industry Program Award 1st Runner-Up".
