ARES

Augmented Reality Assistance Technologies for Safety and and Efficiency Optimization in Explosive Ordnance Exploration

Duration: July 2022 – June 2025

ARES is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF)

The contamination of soil with concealed explosive ordnance is a safety-critical challenge worldwide, including in Germany, and is far from over.

The ARES assistance and display tools are intended to be used throughout the entire explosive ordnance clearance process chain and support users in carrying out their tasks more efficiently, safely and to a higher standard.

Objectives

The ARES assistance and visualization tools will be deployed throughout the entire explosive ordnance removal process chain and support users in the process. The results will primarily be researched and developed for the further development of the product range of the participating SME SenSys.

Topic and objectives of the project

  1. improvement of the measurement process through the use of electromagnetic sensors and higher-quality evaluation algorithms, an AI comparison of the raw data and assistance systems for planning, implementation and communication
  2. user-centered conception and implementation of usable analysis and assistance functions for efficient and safe application of the ARES system in the planning office and in the field.
  3. technical prototypes of mobile, AR-supported display and analysis tools for digitized and spatial interaction and use of the data.

Our goals in ARES

Our sub-project focuses on the research and development of AR and AI assistance technologies for explosive ordnance detection.

The focus of the Fraunhofer HHI work is on two topics. Firstly, the measurement data of the SenSys measurement systems are to be used in data fusion and new higher-value evaluation algorithms (e.g. AI-based analyses) of the measurement, image and metadata.

The second focus of this sub-project is the development of spatial AR assistance tools with a focus on auxiliary functions to increase efficiency, quality and safety in as many phases of explosive ordnance disposal as possible.
