Berlin 6G Conference 2025

The Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) is a world leader in the development for mobile and optical communication networks and systems as well as processing and coding of video signals. Together with international partners from research and industry, Fraunhofer HHI works in the whole spectrum of digital infrastructure – from fundamental research to the development of prototypes and solutions.

At Berlin 6G-Conference 2025 Fraunhofer HHI presents the latest developments and projects in Wireless Communications and Networks and Photonic Networks and Systems.

Wireless Communications and Networks

6G-RIC

The focus of 6G-RIC is on the development of key 6G-technologies and their evaluation in the form of technology demonstrators in “living labs”. Selected technology components are brought together in overarching, end-to-end demonstrators and presented in the context of selected 6G use cases. The research work is complemented by the creation of an open infrastructure that will enable stakeholders to develop technology components and test them using state-of-the-art measurement technology in the lab and under real conditions. An important activity in 6G-RIC is the development of realistic, site-specific channel models based on channel measurement campaigns, together with the development of link-level and system-level simulators.

Photonic Networks and Systems

SUSTAINET

As part of the CELTIC-NEXT initiative, the international research project SUSTAINET develops innovative technologies and solutions to enhance the resilience, energy efficiency, and sustainability of networks. It thus significantly contributes to Europe’s digital transformation and technological sovereignty.

FRONT-RUNNER

The framework FRONT-RUNNER is designed for proactive attack detection and includes an end-to-end ML pipeline for the real-time execution of the developed algorithms. Furthermore, FRONT-RUNNER closely collaborates with other partners to integrate their developments into demonstrations in the Fraunhofer HHI laboratory.

fiber-like

With fiber-like, Fraunhofer HHI offers a cost-effective, laser-based point-to-point connection based on LiFi 2.0 technology. The robust optical wireless links enable up to 10 Gbit/s over distances of up to 1 km – weather-resistant, low-latency, and easy to deploy. Ideal for 6G small-cell backhaul.
