On June 20, 2016, Brigitte Zypries (then Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy - BMWi) opened the Smart Data Forum in Berlin in front of over 200 guests. The Smart Data Forum, funded by the BMWi and developed together with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is a project of Fraunhofer HHI and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DKFI).

In order to take advantage of the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation, companies need opportunities to exchange ideas with others and present their innovations. The Fraunhofer HHI in Berlin offers a showroom for digital technologies to touch and view, as well as a knowledge and networking platform for topics related to smart data.

The Smart Data Forum presents current technical trends at national and international roadshows, presents innovative research projects and products and promotes new partnerships. Since 2016, the forum has already welcomed numerous interested parties from Germany and the world. Today the Forum fulfils what State Secretary Zypries already predicted in her opening speech - "that with the Smart Data Forum we are creating a place that makes innovative digital technologies 'Made in Germany' perceptible and creates a venue for actors from business, science and politics".
