2009

In cooperation with Deutsche Bank, the location initiative "Germany - Land of Ideas" has been awarding prizes since 2006 for exemplary ideas and projects that stand for Germany’s viability.

In 2009, the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut was selected as a location in the "Land of Ideas" from around 2,000 applicants. Among others, the virtual mirror of Fraunhofer HHI was honored as an outstanding example for intelligent POS (Point-of-Sale) systems and for new worlds of experience of the future. The mirror enables the experience of Virtual Reality "on one's own body". The user can virtually view different garments in different variations while wearing them. At the touch of a button on the touchscreen the garment changes shape, color or other design features. The outfit can be composed in an optimal way, while the user moves around freely.

Instead of viewing yourself in a real mirror to verify the appearance of apparels, highly sophisticated 3D image processing techniques are used to visualize the look of new products without the need to actually put them on. A camera captures the real world and outputs the mirrored image onto a large display which replaces the real mirror. The 3D movements of the person are tracked in real-time and computer graphics models of the articles are augmented into the video such that the person seams to wear the virtual objects.
