Thanks to the Rohde & Schwarz AVHE100 encoding and multiplexing solution with HEVC technology from the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, one of the largest switchover actions in German broadcasting history ran smoothly in just one night on March 29, 2017.
The conversion of digital terrestrial television DVB-T to the second generation DVB-T2 HD began in Germany on March 29, 2017. The new standard enables the transmission of TV programs in full HD resolution, significantly better picture quality, and an expanded range of programs. Furthermore, it also works excellently on mobile devices.
For the conversion, ZDF, Germany's largest public broadcaster, relied on the AVHE100 encoding and multiplexing solution from Rohde & Schwarz with the integrated HEVD encoder developed by Fraunhofer HHI. By using the HEVC codec, the system achieves the highest video quality at the lowest possible data rate and offers real-time HEVC encoding of resolutions up to 4K/UHD with up to 60 images per second.
Numerous quality and stability tests by ZDF led to the conclusion that, thanks to the integrated HEVC encoder from Fraunhofer HHI, the R&S AVHE100 has the best image quality available on the market with easy handling and extreme performance compared to established competitors.
The successful use of the HEVC encoder and the significant participation in the development of the HEVC standard confirms the worldwide leading position of the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in the research of mobile and optical communication networks and systems.
