The innovation cluster 5G Berlin e.V. is a partnership between research and industry with the aim to promote innovation relating to “5G”, the communication network of the next generation. The objective is both the testing of technologies as well as the promotion of new 5G – applications. The initiative is currently in the formation phase and will start with the building of the 5G Test Area and the opening of the 5G Center in the beginning of 2018.
The “5G Test Area” includes the sustainable installation and operation of an efficient test infrastructure on the northern campus of the Technical University Berlin. The infrastructure is to be constructed in 3 phases, oriented towards demand and the current state of technology in order to fully exploit the innovation potentials. The “5G Test Area” depicts all relevant technology components of a convergent 5G network and will further the development of innovations in Berlin.
The “5G-Center” supports the internal as well as the external communication of 5G Berlin and serves as a platform for innovation transfer and for the coordination of partner activities. The traditional telecommunications industry in particular shall be connected with new 5G stakeholders. The 5G-Center in the new auditorium of the Fraunhofer HHI forms the central point of contact of 5G Berlin and serves as a networking platform for start-up companies, large enterprises and public authorities.
